Installation of Modern Entertainment Center

I installed my latest project over the weekend. A modern entertainment center in a high rise condominium on Chicago's north side.

The design for the modular pieces that make up the unit came from ideas that the homeowner's had, plus some pictures of similar styles they had seen from internet searches, and my own creativity. Since the pieces are so simple in design we chose an asymmetrical placement that creates a more intriguing look. The staggered cabinets draw your eye from piece to piece more than a symmetrical style would have.

Everything fit nicely in my brother-in-law's humongous van. The table and shelf are 9' long! That's me trying to get it all in without getting wet. It must be a "Murphy's Law" that it rains whenever you're trying to load furniture.

For the modern look we wanted, we choose Panga Panga for the cabinets with smoked glass doors and Walnut for the shelves and table. The colors work well with the existing wall colors and room furnishings.
I particularly like the look of the very linear wood grain on the cabinets.

The cabinets and shelf are mounted using angled cleats which pull it toward the wall. I screwed them to the steel studs with expanding toggle bolts (The drilling brought the condo manager up for visit at the neighbor's request). I wouldn't suggest climbing on that shelf, but I'll bet it can support a lot of weight.

We couldn't wait to get the TV up on the wall to watch the Bears lose to the Bengal's. Oh well...at least the picture looked good!
